Capt. John W. Chase

Seven officers and 89 men were mustered into service on December 16, 1861, with an additional 20 men mustered in on December 24. The next day the battery went into camp at "Camp Chase," in Lowell, Massachusetts. They were the only Vermont organization whose rendezvous was in another state. On February 6, 1861, the battery left Boston on the Ship Idaho bound for Ship Island. They arrived at Ship Island on March 8, 1861. They were attached to General John W. Phelps's brigade.

The battery was stationed in New Orleans, with General Benjamin Butler until May of 1863 when they took part in the following engagements:

Plain's Store, La. --- May 21, 1863

Port Hudson, La. --- May 25-July 9,1863

Jackson, La. --- Aug. 3, 1863
At the Surrender of Port Hudson, the 2nd Battery had the distinction of receiving the flag of surrender from the Confederate commander as they were the closest Union Troops to the fort. The company remained in Port Hudson until July 7, 1865. They mustered out on July 31, 1865, in Burlington, Vermont. with five officers and 148 men.
